Spring 2014 Externship and Clinic Application Deadlines Approaching

The application process for Externships and Clinics has changed! Beginning with spring 2014 positions, externships and clinics will be sorted into two phases: Phase 1 will include Judges and Courts, Florida Coastal Clinics, and the U.S. Attorney’s Offices. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 13th. Phase 2 externships will include Corporations, Public Interest Employers, and Government Entities. Spring applications will open on Symplicity on Monday, September 16th.

Please apply early. According to a recent Florida Bar News Report, recent law graduates with the aforementioned experience often command higher salaries than those graduates with no experience.

How to apply to Externships & Clinics:

Each clinic and externship opportunity is posted with an individual description on Symplicity (https://law-fcsl-csm.symplicity.com/students). Championship at the Orseck Moot Court Competition

Congratulations to the Moot Court Honor Board team on winning the championship at the Orseck Moot Court Competition in June! This State Championship audience is full of appellate lawyers and benched by all seven Justices of the Supreme Court of Florida.

Team members included Shirley Zambrano (Team Manager), Megan Mattson (brief writer), Nakeshia Baptiste and Jennifer D’Augustinis (oralists). In addition to winning the championship, Keshia won the Best Advocate Awards for both the preliminary and final rounds!

The team was coached by Professors Sander Moody and Nick Martino, defeating the University of Florida and Nova Southeastern in the preliminary rounds, the University of Miami in the semi-finals, and Stetson University in the championship round. Florida Coastal has reached the Orseck finals seven of the last nine years and the Orseck semi-finals nine years in a row. Both records are the best in the state for that time period. Congratulations to all!

Zehmer Moot Court Teams Celebrate Success

At the Zehmer National Workers’ Compensation Moot Court Competition, two Moot Court Honor Board teams celebrated tremendous success after battling each other in the semi-finals, where only one could proceed! Samantha Marriott, Megan Mattson, and Britney Horton gave stellar performances, earning a slot in the finals. Camille Smith, Heather McGriff, and Taylor Bowman also shined, as the second team advancing into the semi-finals. In addition, Britney Horton received the Best Advocate Award while Camile Smith received the Professionalism Award, only given by a few competitions. Congratulations to all participants for a job well-done.

Natalie Fina did an incredible job as the Team Manager for both Zehmer teams, while Professor Sander Moody coached. In the last ten years at Zehmer, Florida Coastal has had seven teams in the finals and won four championships. This punctuates the remarkable Honor Board record over the past 12 months, completing 22 competitions, reaching 5 finals, and winning 10 championships, while maintaining its top-10 national brief-writing ranking.
