Effective August 1, 2011 several changes are scheduled to be implemented for the Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33).  These changes include:

  • Eliminating state caps for tuition and fee payments and instead limiting public school payments to the net charges for in-state tuition and fees for any program, whether undergraduate or graduate.
  • Limiting payments to private schools to a total of $17,500 each academic year
  • Paying “kickers” on a monthly basis rather than in a lump sum at the beginning of each enrollment period
  • Allows those Vocational Rehabilitation (chapter 31) students who are also chapter 33 eligible to elect payment of the chapter 33 housing allowance appropriate to the zip code for their school in lieu of the statutory chapter 31 monthly stipend
  • Will allow payment for more than one licensing or certification exam and will pay for national exams used for college admission (ACT, SAT, LSAT, GMAT, etc.)
  • Eliminates break pay for all GI Bill programs.
