Multicultural Affairs

Diversity Week

Diversity Week remains the centerpiece for each academic year’s multicultural activity. It is designed to fuse with the general culture of the school in an interactive exchange of information and cultural experiences. Whether it is an interesting lecture, a live multicultural musical program, a multicultural hot dog Wednesday, speaker’s panel, or talent show, it is here for you. We will even throw in a multicultural movie. Enjoy, learn, and experience!

About Multicultural Affairs

Multicultural Services, supervised by the Dean of Multicultural Affairs, (Assistant Dean) addresses the needs, issues, and concerns of students in nationality, ethnic, language, gender, and sexual orientation groups in our community and as a resource and referral officer for all such matters. The functions include representation and presentation of these students' perspectives to the Florida Coastal School of Law Community and providing independent resources and references to other departments when needed.

The office of Multicultural Affairs is designed and intended to work with all segments of the Florida Coastal School of Law community to help the development of these previously identified students through direct provision of opportunities, advice, and assistance. That advice and assistance is addressed to a myriad of problems such as analysis of academic goals and priorities, coping with personal, adverse conditions that affect law school performance, problems with interpersonal relations with other students and faculty, help in coping with the economic hardships and sacrifices while in law school, identification of symptoms and traits that may require professional consultations, assistance in the settlement of organizational disputes, and the allocation of financial resources for activities that are essentially multicultural to student groups that may require such assistance in the implementation on their programs./p>

There is often special support of new multicultural student organizations in their development of activities. This support is provided to student organizations that are organized under the auspices of the Student Bar Association (SBA) as well as other special groups such as the Spousal Support Group.

The office supports diversity programming, to inculcate appreciation for multiculturalism and assists with general and smaller student meetings for these purposes. Similarly, the academic and personal growth and development of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and under other under represented student groups is a concern of the Multicultural Affairs Office.

The Assistant Dean suggests courses to the Curriculum Committee that would promote multicultural and diversity awareness.

The Assistant Dean participates in, or solely sponsors, diversity presentations, the annual Diversity Week program, and presentation of speakers on subjects concerning multicultural interests.

Finally, the office provides a rather unique monthly multicultural and general event known as “Diversity Round Table” that brings together students, faculty, and staff for the purpose of having stimulating free and open discussion of a wide range of multicultural issues by and between the members of multicultural groups with the attendance and participation of the general community.
